Different Types Of Birth Control Pills

Understanding the different types of birth control pills
Birth control pills are used to prevent pregnancy.  Taken by mouth and when followed correctly, pills can prevent conception up to 99.9%.  You must
note, though, that these pills only prevent pregnancy and do not protect you from getting any sexually transmitted disease including HIV.  There are
many different types of birth control pills out in the market.  Before you purchase any of them, it is important that you understand the mode of
action as well as the side effects.
TYPES OF PILLS AND HOW THEY PREVENT PREGNANCY
    Combination pills: these are the standard birth control pills.  It has a combination of estrogen and progesterone, and works in a number of
ways to prevent pregnancy:
o    Prevents ovulation
o    Thickens the mucous of the cervix, making it hard for the sperm to reach the egg
o    Thins the lining of the uterus, making implantation difficult
Benefits of combination pills are:
o    They are 99% effective in preventing pregnancy if taken religiously.  A failure margin of 3% to 5% can arise if doses are missed.
o    Menstrual periods are more tolerable
o    Less acne
o    Lower risk for ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, and pelvic inflammatory disease
o    Reduces the risk of ectopic pregnancy
Side effects include:
o    Nausea and vomiting
o    Headache
o    Breast tenderness
o    Decreased libido
o    Dizziness
o    Spotting
o    Not advisable for women with a history of cardio-vascular disease, migraine, and liver problems.
o    Pill must be stopped if pregnancy is suspected.
    Mini Pill – this pill contains only progestin, making it safe to be used during breastfeeding.  They work just about the same way that
combination pills do to stop pregnancy.
Other benefits of the mini pill include:
o    Safe for women with cardiovascular problems
o    Lightens menstrual flow and reduces cramps
o    Protects the woman from cancers of the ovary and uterus as well as pelvic inflammatory disease.
Side effects and disadvantages of mini pills are:
o    Increased compliance is a must.  The mini-pill is less tolerant to missed doses compared to combination pills.
o    Because of the decreased dose, it is less effective compared to combination pills.
o    It is important that you take the mini pill on the same time each day in increase its effectiveness.
o    Spotting
o    Abdominal cramping
o    Fatigue
o    Hot flushes
o    Decreased libido
o    Headache
o    Dizziness
o    Insomnia
    Extended-cycle pills – this type of contraceptive pill is commonly used to regulate painful menstrual periods.  Depending on the type of
extended-cycle pills, you may have periods 4 times a year or 3 times in a year. It prevents pregnancy by thinning the endometrial lining of the
uterus, making it difficult for a fertilized egg to be implanted.
The benefits of this pill are:
o    Regulated periods.  Because the lining of the uterus is thin, there is no monthly shedding of the lining.  This way, you get fewer menstrual
symptoms.
Side effects and disadvantages of extended-cycle pills are:
o    Spotting
o    Nausea
o    Vomiting
o    Breast tenderness
o    Headache
o    Mood changes
o    Decreased libido
    Emergency contraceptives – this pill is given within 120 hours of unprotected sex.  It is available over the counter for women aged 18 and
up.  This is usually utilized during when a woman has missed a dose of contraceptive pills, condom breakage, or when a woman is a victim of coerced or
forced sex.
Benefits of emergency contraceptives:
o    There is an 87% chance of preventing unwanted pregnancy.
o    Does not have any effect on the fetus
Side effects and disadvantages:
o    The efficacy of the pill is determined by the time it is taken.  The earlier it is taken after intercourse, the better the effect.
o    Nausea and vomiting
o    Dizziness
o    Breast tenderness
o    Headache
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BEFORE BUYING CONTRACEPTIVE PILLS
You must first consult with your ob-gyn to help you choose the right oral contraceptive pills for you.  Your present physical and medical condition
must be carefully considered for as stated with other pills, they can do some serious side effects.  Study the side effects of each pill and see if
you can carry the side effects without disrupting your lifestyle.  You may also want to compare prices of each pill and ask your health insurance if
you can have a discount on your preferred pill.  However, it is not advisable to buy cheap pills for they can produce many side effects, and can do
you more harm if you have a medical condition.  A missed dose can lead to undetected pregnancy.  Taking pills while you are pregnant can pose some
serious harm to the baby.   Carefully consider if you are capable of maintaining the regimen of taking the pills.
